ArcGIS is a software suite provided by ESRI. The package includes products that allow you to build a geographic information system. ArcMap is the program that allows you to view, edit, develop and analyze geographic data. By using this package, you can highlight a section on a map and extract the image to create a new file. Files support pictures for display or use with an interface image map. Open the ArcMap application on your computer. Click on “New” at the top of the screen to start a new ArcMap session. Insert the Data and Maps DVD into your disk drive. Locate the data file for “\usa\census\states.sdc” and open it. Move to the state of interest. Click on the “Zoom in” button at the top of the screen to enlarge the state. Navigate to the “Select by feature from” drop-down list on the screen.
