Downloading opera won’t affect Internet Explorer. I’ve been using Opera for almost 2 years now and it is not having any problem with Internet Explorer. Just ignore the message saying that you set Opera as the main browser.

It shouldn’t affect Internet Explorer unless you set Opera as your default browser which causes IE to mess up because its not your default. I got Firefox and IE and IE is my default. During the setup look at the check boxes during the installation and make sure you unchecked “Set as Default Browser” if present. Hope this helps!!
