How do I download images as actual photos & NOT just jpeg icons in Safari?

I can not get either Safari or Firefox to download images from websites, e.g. ebay items, as pictures—-they only download as jpeg icons with a code name and then have to be opened in another app. In Explorer I used to be able to see the images as actual photos, which helped me when I was searching for a saved item in my files.
