How do I disable NDR (Non-Delivery Response) messages on my Exchange or Exchange Small Business Server?
By default Microsoft Exchange 2003 and SBE will accept any email sent to it and will respond to any email that was sent to a non-existent email address. This may sound like a good idea, but spammers use this configuration by sending spam “to” a fake address and “from” the address that they want to receive the mail. The Exchange or SBE server will respond to the message with a note that the “to” address does not exist. The spam message ends up at the original “from” address and the mail server owner thinks it was just another bounced message. Because of this problem and because a very large number of target addresses do not exist, Eschelon prohibits NDR messages from mail servers that smarthost their mail through us. These messages pile up on our systems causing exceptionally large queues of undeliverable mail as well as putting the blame on us for spamming because of the message that are delivered.
