How do I cut back engrained/ old polish from wood veneer?

It depends what the old polish is made of. Start by washing it with methylated spirit. If it’s wax polish, that will remove it. If that doesn’t work, use white spirit. That will shift shellac based French polish, button polish and most old-fashioned varnishes. If it still won’t shift, it’s polyurethane. That needs paint stripper – but be careful not to get it on anything else.
