How do I control Fusarium wilt?
Fusarium wilt is a relatively new disease and as such, breeders, pathologists and agronomists are still trying to understand its life cycle and mode of resistance. Researchers have identified registered varieties with varying levels of resistance and are developing a protocol for a recognized, standardized testing and rating system. Over time, the industry may move to a system similar to blackleg rating in canola, however, breeders do not necessarily screen or rate current varieties for Fusarium wilt. If you have noticed Fusarium wilt symptoms in the past, or are in an area where the disease has been a problem, discuss your options with your seed supplier about a resistant variety. As well, remember that sound crop rotation and proper sanitation are important in the prevention of many other canola diseases and will likely help control Fusarium wilt.
