How Do I Confront an Employee About Disrespectful Behavior When Drunk?
You may have heard it said that a drunk man’s words are a sober man’s thoughts. This represents the result of lowered inhibitions when drinking, when the truth may just come out. If you’re an employer or a supervisor and happen to run into an employee who’s intoxicated, you may witness or be the brunt of disrespectful behavior. This is a problem that needs to be confronted, because it can create animosity at the workplace and affect work performance. Set an appointment with your employee, or invite him out to lunch to discuss the matter as soon as possible. Do so in a friendly manner, preferably after a day has passed and when the employee is sober, and make the employee feel comfortable. Tell the employee that he need not worry, and be reassuring. He may have already apologized for the action, but the matter needs to be discussed further. Engage in a friendly conversation about the incident. This will make your intentions clear that the matter is on the table and needs to be discussed
