How do i collect a urine sample from my dog?
I take it the puppy or doggie is not housebroken yet? I am in the process of training a new puppy myself…….what a fun thing. It is very challenging, but when you reap all the rewards of a housebroken dog, it makes you proud and happy. Anyway, the way I have always done it, is when you take the puppy outside for pee time, just before and right when they squat to take the pp….slide a small dish with very low edge on it underneath where the puppy will pp. It usually works and works well. You just have to kind of watch and when you notice its getting close to the time, right when they go to do it, use the dish. Hope this helps some.
My vet had us try with a paper plate (the waxed kind) but everytime she started to go, we put the plate in place and she’d scoot away. I’d try that approach but I can’t tell you I was successful – but my dog wasn’t leaking and they don’t need very much. Once you get the sample, pour it into the specimen container or a clean cup. If you can’t get one, the vet will often place a catheter or syringe in the dog and collect one directly from the bladder if a sample is really necessary.
