How do i collect a urine sample from my dog?

Your vet should be able to pull urine out of her bladder with a special needle and an ultrasound machine (no this won’t hurt her, we do it all the time in my practice. the needle pierces the skin and the bladder wall and pulls urine out without disturbing any other organs). If you can’t get a cup under her or anything like that, this would be the best thing to do. Also, thank you so much for being smart and also calling your vet. so many people think that there is no serious problem and don’t call the vet til it becomes more serious. Kudos! Hope everything goes well with your puppy!

You need a flat shallow plate or cup (something that will fit underneath of her easily. When she begins to urinate, put the plate/cup underneath….they only need a small sample…you will want to store it in something air tight (an old tupperware container etc) a fresh sample is best, so try to get it the morning of the Vet appt….either way, it needs to be refrigerated…also, if she “goes” on the floor, you can suck it up with a syringe, not the best sample…but it works as a last resort. If all else fails, the Vet can try to get one when she goes in for her appt.

don’t stress yourself out they can get a sample from her there if you are unable to get one. I work in a vet office and it is very rare that a client will bring the sample with them to the appointment. Try not to let her go outside before your appointment so that she has a bladder and they will either walk her outside or get a sample directly from her bladder. I f they asked you to bring a sample— When she squats to pee you can try placing a small paper plate under her. other options are things that are small: try using a disposable pie pan or even a small bowl. if she is going on a hard wood floor you could try using a medicine dropper or something else to that effect to suck the urine off of the floor and place it in a container.

If you don’t feel confident about catching urine in a cup, which isn’t easy with a small pup. Then make sure she doesn’t go outside about 1/2 hour before you take her to the vet. When you get there don’t walk her, go inside and tell the receptionist that you need someone to catch a urine sample for you, they should gladly come outside and do this task for you. Trust me, I must do this 20 times a day at my work. If she happens to have an accident on your floor at home, see if you can suck it up with a medicine dropper or syringe.

Get a ziplock baggie, set the dog on your lap. Open the bag and hold the opening right up to your dog. Just leave her on your lap for awhile and pet her while you leave the bag up against her. When she starts leaking it will leak right into the bag.
