How do i coach 1st base girls softball ages 7-8?
A first base coach is basically a person who motivates the batter/runner to get there as fast as possible. “RUN RUN RUN, DIG DIG DIG, GET THERE, GET THERE, GET THERE”. Without a runner a base no score can get on the board. The next step is to tell the runner to advance to 2nd base. You only tell them to go on when it was a really good hit and you think they can get there fast enough b/4 the ball. If not, always tell them stay to be on the safe side. If your not sure, tell them to “TURN & LOOK” This is when they just barelly round the bag and look for the ball, if defense makes a mistake(like dropping the ball or over threw the ball) they will already have a lead on going to 2nd. Always, talk to the runner and keep their head in the game. They’re kids and their attention span is still short!
