How Do I Clean My PC Registry?

Think of your computer’s registry as an ever-expanding file that houses a large collection of details about the machine, from where programs are stored to paths to a document or photo you may have just saved. The registry is essentially the brains of the computer, storing all configuration options and settings in the Microsoft Windows operating system. Cleaning the registry definitely involves some risk, but when done properly should have an impact on the PC’s overall performance, making it boot more quickly and run faster. Save any important data to an external hard drive or backup disks, then create a system restore point in your computer. To do this click “Start,” click “Run,” type “%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe”, and then click “OK.” Create a restore point and then click “OK” again. Give the restore point a name and then click “Close.” Create a backup of the registry by clicking “Start,” then selecting “Run” and typing “regedit.exe” to launch the Windows Registry Editor.
