This assumes that you’re casting off knitwise – i.e. in stocking stitch (1 row knit, 1 row purl) with the knit side facing you: Knit two stitches onto the right-hand needle. Using the left-hand needle, insert it from left to right into the first stitch you knitted, and – being careful not to let the other stitch slip off – pass this first stitch from right to left, over the other stitch (i.e. the second one you knitted). Then knit another stitch onto the right-hand needle and do exactly the same until you have one stitch remaining on the right needle; cut your yarn and slip it through this final stitch and pull firmly.
