Where you purchased your orchid will make a difference in the immediate care. Some growers pot properly, and many do not, or they sell the plants right when they need repotting. So, you will need to do the following: First, check the potting medium. Does it smell fresh, or does it smell moldy? If it smells moldy or is not firm little bark chunks (or fresh spaghnum moss), it will need to be replaced. You can get potting medium from most nurserys, that is made especially for orchid plants. DO NOT pot in dirt. Dirt will kill the plant. You can look up how to pot the plant or call an orchid grower like Orchids by Hauserman (Illinios) for more information, or get a book at the store. Take the plant out of the pot in order to examine the root structure. If you find it is potted in a pot with no holes for drainage, you will need to fix this, since they need drainage or the roots will eventually die.
