Use the square feet of the deck. That is your answer, the rest is cutting, BUT MAKE SURE EACH END IS SCREWED INTO THE JOISTS UNDER THEM. But this is nearly impossible. Suggest making a drawing with joists under and pencil in the herringbone pattern. Good luck.
