Converting a Gas Grill to a Charcoal GrillMake sure the propane tank has been turned off. Remove the tank from the gas grill by unscrewing the connector to the barbecue. Dispose of the tank properly. If the gas grill has a direct line that supplies gas from a gas utility company, call the utility to have them disconnect the line. Do not attempt this on your own. They will have to turn off the gas to cap the line. Once the propane tank or gas line have been disconnected, remove the top grill that holds the food and take out the lava rock on the bottom of the grill. Remove the rack that holds the rock and take out the burners on the bottom. There may be a few screws that hold them inside or they may be freestanding. Once the burners are out, put the lava rock rack back (not the lava rock) along with the grill rack. The grill is now ready to use as a charcoal grill.
