Breeding responsibly isn’t a profession. It’s done for the love of a breed and a sincere desire to improve and/or preserve it as it should be. It’s EXTREMELY expensive, and if you’re looking for financial aid (which isn’t available) then you can’t afford it. Many of us need second jobs just to support our hobby, so if you’re serious, get yourself in a financial position where you have plenty of money at your disposal, and join a local breed club and ask for a mentor. They’ll help teach you everything you need to know about your breed of choice, even helping you choose your first dog.
Work on becoming a professional dog HANDLER/TRAINER, that way breeding dogs comes from the desire for better dogs to train/handle. Over the years I have watched hundreds, if not thousands, become interested in breeding dogs only to breed once or twice then never to be heard from again. Those that stick around for year after year do so because they do something with their dogs BESIDES breed them.

But, Since you asked I’ll give you the “Big Picture” Anybody can breed a litter… it just takes two fertile dogs, and those are easy to come by. The trick is to breed a litter that meets the breed standard, and that isn’t plagued by health problems during the lifetime of the dogs. Also, if you do things right, you can create puppies that are well socialized (in other words, will make great pets) and you can also make puppies that will be easier to potty train than the average pet-store puppy is. 1. Good Question more people need to ask it. Go to Dog Shows dog people love to talk about their breed and pick your breed. Contact the local club for that breed and ask to attend. At these meetings they discuss shows, breed standards, judges requirements, things show people are looking for in their breed, most of these people will be professional breeders all will be happy to advise you on what to look for in the perfect mating, what dogs are producing the best coat, conformation, intelligence, ability and no disabilities. You can lease a female from a breeder and just let her move in and have her puppies at your house with an agreement that you get first or second pick of the litter, dog people will do things like that, or you can purchase a female from one of these people they want to keep their name in the show circuit as a breeder of top quality puppies so the more of your pups that end up winning dog shows the better your reputation as a breeder.
