How do I become a music tutor?
I’m a music tutor, and i did a BEd in Music. You don’t have to have any qualifications as such if you want to do private tuition, but you’ll need a degree and a teaching qualification if you want to teach in schools. If you want to do private tuition, it’s best though that you have some sort of qualification as this looks better and will gain you more pupils. You can do a HNC or HND in Music (either one or two year courses), or you can sit graded exams on whatever your instrument is (ABRSM, Trinity College and LCM are some of the recognised ones). You can do up to Grade 8, then an advanced exam which gives you a teaching qualification. Go into your local music shop and they’ll be able to give you a syllabus free of charge, listing what you need to do for the graded exams.
