Becoming a certified Texas barbecue judgeBecoming a certified Texas barbecue judge is as simple as attending a barbecue judge class in which you learn about barbecue standards and then practice applying them to barbecue tastings. The classroom part of the class teaches you the theories and standards for barbecue, and the hands-on part of the class lets you practice your new knowledge. Barbecue judges are not typically certified to judge particular styles of barbecue; rather they are certified to judge at events sanctioned by the organization who granted them their certification. The Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) and the Memphis Barbecue Network (MBN) both certify barbecue judges. They cover all styles of barbecue, including Texas barbecue. You do not need to be a member of KCBS or MBN to take a class.
