How do I attach a wood mantel to brick?
InstructionsPlace the mantel against the brick where you wish to attach it, and mark the points on the top ends of the mantel with a pencil. Cut mounting cleats, which are sections of 2-by-4 wood that attach directly to the brick wall. Measure the length of the shelf from the inner section of the mantel. Cut a piece of 2-by-4 to fit inside this inner section of the mantel. Position the mounting cleats to hide them inside the mantel. Using a masonry bit, drill a hole through the brick, and, using a wood drill bit, drill a hole in the mounting cleat. Attach the mounting cleats to the brick, using concrete screws. Place the mantel directly above the mounting cleats, and push the mantel against the wall, without any gaps. Secure the mantel to the cleats, using finish nails about 8 inches apart. Use a hammer to drive the finish nails through the top of the mantel and into the mounting cleats. Do this for each side of the wooden mantel.
