How do I apply for a new sign, replacement, relocation, or repair of street signs?
The Highway Division will make replacement, relocation, and repairs by request. A sign application is available to request new signs. The installation of speed limit signs is a complicated procedure requiring approval from the Massachusetts Highway Department. This requirement was set up decades ago in order to prevent towns from posting unrealistically low speed limits and then setting up speed traps to generate revenues from out-of-town motorists. Regulatory signs must be approved by the Town Manager and filed by the Clerks office in order to be enforceable.
