First, press the shooting mode button (red camera icon). Next, turn the mode dial to any setting except [GUIDE]. Press the Up arrow in the direction of the exposure compensation icon (+ and – signs against a background split diagonally between white and black). Then use the arrow pad to make the image brighter (Right arrow) or darker (Left arrow). The value can be adjusted +/- 2 EV in 1/3 EV increments. Press the [OK] button to apply the setting. Note: Exposure compensation may not produce the desired brightness on the subject if the area in the frame surrounding the subject is extremely bright or extremely dark.
