The World Meteorological Association chooses names for hurricanes. There are six lists of names each for the Atlantic, the Eastern Pacific and the Central Pacific sectors. These six lists are rotated reusing the same names unless there is a particularly damaging storm (such as Andrew or Katrina) whose names are retired and replaced with something new.
