How do hummingbirds migrate?
Hummingbirds migrate just like other birds, by flying. Quite incredible since they are so tiny and delicate! But then again, think of the monarch butterfly, which also migrates each year. It is a myth that Hummingbirds travel on the backs of Geese when migrating, as they are fully capable of making the incredible journey on their own. They migrate to warmer grounds where nectar is abundant, like Mexico, Panama, and Central America. Some species of Hummingbirds, lke the Rufous, stay in Florida, Texas, and the California Coast throughout the winter months. Here’s an interesting quote: “…they manage to fly hundreds — or even thousands — of miles fueled by the nectar from blooming flowers. (Many even make the 20-hour trip over the Gulf of Mexico without any food or rest!) They migrate alone, yet many end up at the same exact feeders or gardens where they spent last spring and summer.” Here is also a link with lots of Q’s and A’s on Hummingbirds.
