How do health professional schools view withdrawing from a course, retaking a course, or taking a course Pass/Fail?
You should do your best to avoid having to withdraw or retake a course, especially science prerequisites. Medical schools generally view a “W” as a C- or lower, even if you repeat the course. If you receive a “D” in Organic Chemistry I and then retake the course and earn an “A”, allopathic schools will average the two grades (yielding a C+). In contrast, osteopathic schools will take the higher of the two grades; so, if you plan on applying to osteopathic school it may be a good idea to retake a course you had difficulty with. Prehealth courses taken pass/fail will not count towards completion of the prehealth concentration.
