How do guitars make different sounds (not notes)?

There are many different schools of thought on how to approach getting “that” tone. Personally, I try to get an amp that sounds good (that isn’t digital), get some good quality pickups (because the ones that come with the guitar usually aren’t that good – I like Seymour Duncan a lot, especially the JB’s), and if I need certain effects to either get carefully chosen pedals or use a multifx processor. I only get my distortion from the amp – it sounds better. Well, with the right amp at least! My two words of wisdom are this – set a goal for what you want to achieve. It is very difficult to get a rig that can sound like Slayer and Iron Maiden and Kiss and Pink Floyd (for example). So go for a certain sound, and build from there. Second, play as many different guitars and amps as you possibly can, and really try to listen to how the amp sounds, and feel how the guitar sits in your hands.
