How do Goldfish Mate?
Goldfish reach sexual maturity around the age of nine months. The males will develop “breeding tubercules”, which are white spots that appear on their fins. The females will become swollen with eggs.Courtship consists of the male swimming doggedly behind the female, bumping his head into her genital area and basically harrassing her until she either attacks him or decides she’d like to mate with him.Mating involves the male spraying sperm over the female’s eggs as she lays them. The eggs will then sink to the bottom, where the oftentimes forgetful parents may gobble them up if they are not removed from the fish tank or pond and placed in separate accommodations. It takes one to two weeks for the eggs to hatch.
