How do gender stereotypes hurt men?
Men were raised never to cry and still carry that weight, even when it may be a very reasonable reaction. Today, it is more accepted for a man to show some emotion, but still ,to out right cry, will draw unwanted attention. This can be seen as a, no win situation for him. They are told it’s not healty to hold in their emotions, and yet, they feel, it’s not healthy to exhibit them either! They are caught between what they feel, what their family’s ideals are, what society (friends, co-workers) expect, and what the medical community says is the best. The stress for just this one issue is complex and overpowering. It is no wonder that many times their response in public is either an angry confusion or frustration. Mixed signals can lead you in circles, and sometimes, you just have to try and trust yourself. This is just the top of the ICE-BERG. I’m sure there are many more examples.
