How do GAPs relate to organic certification?
Organic certification is not equivalent to GAPs certification. Although the practices of organic agriculture assure that food safety standards are being met on some key areas (see article by James Riddle, UMN), the fundamental risk factors addressed in GAPs to minimize introduction of illness pathogens (sanitation, hygiene and water quality) are not addressed by the organic certification process or its supported production practices.
