If you take a look in the toilet tank…you will see that when you push the handle to flush, a little chain lifts a rubber flap…that opens a hole which lets the water go from the tank to the bowl. When the tank is empty, the little rubber flap flops down, covers the hole and stops the water from leaving the tank. The water starts to refill the tank. As the water level rises, the floating ball also rises and when it gets to a certain level the rod at the other end of the ball clicks off the water valve. The most common problem is the flapper. Sometimes it just needs to be wiped clean with a rag because it has gotten some water residue on it. Sometimes the flap is just out of position and needs to be adjusted to completely cover the hole. If that doesn’t solve the problem…you will have to buy a new rubber flap. They are quite inexpensive and very simple to install.
