How do Eriksons 8 stages of psychosocial development compare to Piagets approach?
1. Basic trust versus mistrust (birth-1 yr.) – If the child receives warm, responsive care they learn to develop trust. If there care is harsh and insensitive, they develop mistrust. 2. Autonomy versus shame and doubt (1-3 yrs.) – If the child is allowed to make choices such as to walk, climb & manipulate they develop a sense of autonomy. On the other hand, if the child is overly restricted, force, or shamed they develop shame & doubt. 3. Initiative versus guilt (3-6 yrs.) – If they receive support for emerging sense of purpose and they learn about roles & institutions of society, they develop initiative. If the constantly experience demands for self-control they are likely to develop guilt. 4. Industry versus inferiority (6 yrs.-puberty) – If they develop a capacity for productive work, cooperation, and pride in work they experience industry. If their experiences at school, in peer groups, and with parents do not foster feelings of competence & mastery they develop feelings of inferio
