How do EMS and sustainability relate?
EMS traditionally focuses on the environmental aspects resulting from activities that occur on an installation. EMS is an ongoing and systematic process of establishing priorities, managing and reducing environmental impacts, achieving continual improvement, and ultimately increasing readiness. The Army will integrate sustainability into all activities by using ISO 14001 standard as its EMS framework to improve performance and compliance. While not all sustainability goals are required by a traditional EMS, they can be effectively managed by it. ISO 14001 enables sustainability and ensures that all the mechanisms are in place to achieve the installation’s 25-year sustainability goals. To be effective an EMS must look at the long-term goals of the organization, align its objectives and targets, and ensure that they are met.
