How do emergency contraceptive pills work?
Depending on the time during the menstrual cycle that they are taken, emergency contraceptive pills keep the egg from leaving the ovary, keep the sperm from meeting the egg, or keep the fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus. EC pills will not work once the fertilized egg has attached to the uterus. EC will not hurt you or your pregnancy if you took them and didn’t know you were already pregnant.
