How Do Egg Cartons Keep Eggs From Breaking?
The shape of the egg carton is designed to protect the egg from shocks, bumps and vibrations. Egg cartons have a dimpled form, which allows each egg to rest in a dimple. An egg carton functions much like a buffer. The composition of the egg carton absorbs vibrations and forces. Egg cartons are normally constructed of plastic, pulp or Styrofoam, materials that absorb shocks that could damage the egg. Styrofoam is especially good at performing like the shock absorbers on an automobile. Egg cartons are also designed to be stacked atop one another during shipment. The stacked cartons do not put much stress on one another and lock into place to disperse bumps and impact. Ideally, the stacked cartons stay in place during transport.
