How do editors view the indexing course and my having completed it?

0

From Nancy Mulvany: During the past two years I have heard quasi-complaints from editors about receiving scores of work inquiries from people who have just completed Basic Indexing. They are overwhelmed and not certain about how to evaluate these inquiries. Here is what I tell the editors: “A passing grade in the USDA course does not gaurantee that a person can write an acceptable index. Anyone who has read the Preface in my book knows how I feel about teaching indexing. I as a teacher cannot turn someone into an indexer unless that person has a natural knack for indexing. It is my experience that only 10% of my students demonstrate the ability to index really well. Of that 10% many do not become indexers because they do not want to deal with self-employment. “Students are told that they should receive a grade of 86 or higher if they plan to enter the professional indexing market. The grading in this course is weighted. There are four Index Preparation assignments; they account for 70%
