How do companies attract or foster leaders with the values and characteristics that engender loyalty?
You hire very carefully and screen for people who hold the values that are important to your organization. Then you reinforce those values by how you compensate employees and how you communicate to them and train them throughout a career. Q: What are the values corporations should look for when developing a senior leadership team? A: The most difficult questions I faced in writing the book were: What are the rules, and how many are there? I think there are very few. And they’re all closely linked to the Golden Rule: Put yourself in the other person’s position. Standards that are pretty much consistent with what you might learn in Sunday school are the ones that make people very wealthy in business. One obvious rule is: Don’t make business decisions that abuse loyalty. Reward the right results. Many, many, of the things that you see in business today reward people for abusing others. It’s true in the customer world, where the guy who gets the best deal is the customer who switches back
