How do christians determine the date of birth of jesus(pbuh)?
The date wasn’t determined as much as it was set by tradition. Whether that came from wanting something to look forward to during the long nights of winter (the days starting to lengthen, indicating a new beginning), or simply to replace some pagan holiday with one of their own, really is _not_ known. As to the year, they used the calendar as their guide. The Julian calendar (established by Julius Caesar) started with the year Christ was born. Whether the count of the years remained accurate during the middle or dark ages is unlikely, but post middle ages Christians still used it and its replacement, the Gregorian calendar. If you look at the wiki article on Christmas, you’ll see that it says that Christmas is the commemoration of the birth of Jesus.
