How do children learn their first words?
From birth, we talk to our children about objects and events in their world. By listening to what we say, children gradually begin to understand the meaning of frequently-repeated words. They develop an understanding of these words before they begin to use them. Children who have Down syndrome, however, find it harder to learn their first words by listen and will benefit from visually-based approaches such as those used in See and Learn Language and Reading.
