How do CCM signals modify heart cell function?
The cellular effects of CCM signals are under investigation. One theory is that in the short-term, CCM signals can modify calcium cycling within the cell in a manner that improves the strength of contraction. Another theory suggests that these electrical signals may have effects on gene expression and post translational modification of proteins and enzymes involved with contraction. Research about these two aspects, which are not mutually exclusive, is ongoing.
