How do cargo ships from other countries transport goods to the East Coast United States?
The Philadelphia Regional Port Authority – Port’s largest facility, is the Packer Avenue Marine Terminal which is a state-of-the-art handling facility for cargoes such as containers, steel, perishables, project and heavy lift cargoes. The facility provides Panamax access and some of the largest heavy-lift gantry cranes on the US East Coast. ( A Panamax access means that any ship that can pass through the Panama Canal, and use this facility.) Access from the sea, is via the Delaware River. People have been traveling by sea from Cork Ireland to Philadelphia since the 1800’s. Where it once was a 50 day trans-Atlantic voyage it is now a 6 day cruise. Once on the East US coast, ships converge down the Delaware River to Philadelphia.
