How do butch women perform gender in a man/masculine way right?
I do not think that it is as simple as ‘they dress and act like men’ Many ‘butch’ women are lesbians – it is an aesthetic acceptable in the lesbian community. It cuts down on unwanted attention from men, and increases lesbian visibility. Hetero women who look more masculine usually say that they just do not like looking girlie – it does not appeal to them. It is not just about rejecting feminine things and wanting to ape men – it easy to see from a feminist perspective that a lot of feminine things are rather trivial and a bit crap really, so if a woman rejects them she is making a statement about what society has offered her as acceptablt feminine behaviour/ attire. The term butch is used positively by some lesbians, but I wouldn’t use it around a hetero woman who is butch looking!
