How do brick-and-mortar retailers handle inventory?

This is targeted towards apparel retailers (Forever 21, Macy’s). Is there an industry standard inventory system, are they web-based, or are they custom built per retailer. I know there are online databases of all inventory combined. My focus is inventory on a per-location basis.
