Both gel-filled and saline-filled implants can interfere with the detection of early breast cancer because they can “hide” suspicious lesions and make mammography more difficult to perform. Calcium deposits that often form in the scar tissue around the implant may also interfere with interpreting the mammogram. If you have implants make sure you tell the technologist performing your mammogram. An experienced technologist knows how to push the implant away from the breast tissue to get the best possible views and also avoid rupturing the implant.
