There are many steps to getting braces. First: If you need to you might have to get teeth extracted. It’s not fun. I had it done. Second: You will go to your orthodontist. They will polish your teeth just like a regular cleaning. Then they will prop your mouth open. They will glue the brackets on one by one. Then they will put bands around 4 teeth. The Molars. After that you may pick colors for your braces if you’d like. Then they tie them up with the wire. That’s all! It’s not that bad. Typically braces are cemented to your teeth and attached to each other with a wire. That wire is regularly tightened by your orthodontist to shift your teeth to the position they’re supposed to be in. The length of time you’ll have to wear them depends on how long it takes for your teeth to move to the right position. Mine were on for a year, some people have them on longer, some shorter. My sister only needed hers for a few months, BUT you have to make sure you wear your retainer afterwards or they will shift back to their original position. After the first little while you can eat whatever you want. They’ll be tender at first so you won’t want to be eating things like apples and hard foods. I lived on soups and pastas for the first couple weeks. Eventually, you can go back to everything, but make sure you take care of them, and watch for food getting stuck in them!

With cement. I had braces for a long time on my upper teeth and it’s not a painful process to have them put on but it DOES take a while. The wire is threaded through a series of little blocks (these can be colored, mine were gray). The “blocks” will be glued on with a kind of cement. Every so often you’ll have to go in to the orthodontist and they’ll tighten the tension on the wire which gradually adjusts your teeth. You’ll be able to eat most things, but sticky or gummy things will have to be avoided. Mostly candy; things like gum, taffy, etc. will stick to the braces and be impossible to get off. Any stringy foods like orange segments or things with skin like apples will leave bits behind in the braces that you’ll have to clean out regularly. Depending on how much work needs to be done on your mouth and how old you are, it could take a few months to much much longer. The older you are the more time it will take to adjust your teeth. Younger people don’t need as much.
