How do belugas nurse underwater?
• The calf bumps its mother on her mammaries to let her know it wants to nurse. Mom raises her tail, and the calf turns on its side so it can latch onto one of its mother’s two mammaries. Beluga calves do not suck. Instead the mother squirts the milk into her calf’s mouth. The frilly-edged tongue of a baby beluga helps it to form a seal when nursing.
