How do astronomers report their discoveries?
Astronomers generally publish their results — new observations, analyses, or theoretical developments — in a scientific journal. Shorter items, or those whose importance merits immediate attention, are submitted to weekly or biweekly magazines such as Nature, Science or The Astrophysical Journal Letters, just to name a few. More lengthy articles, including tables of data and more detailed discussion, are published in journals such as Astronomy and Astrophysics, The Astrophysical Journal and various others. Conferences regularly bring together astronomers working within a particular subject area and new discoveries often are “saved” to be presented at such events. The latest information is also shared via the Internet, as postings on web pages and in newsgroups or by direct electronic data sharing.
