How do AS#1’s mixed age classrooms work?

0

Mixed-age classes at AS#1 are flexible and are based on staffing and the mix of kids in the building. Teachers are grouped into teams that teach grades K-2, 3-5 or 6-8. Students are initially placed based on the grade in which they are enrolled, but if the student shows aptitude at a different grade level, the student’s Core teacher attempts to meet those needs within the class through differentiated instruction. If the student’s academic needs are still not being met in the class, the Core teacher brings it to the teaching team to problem solve. A child with advanced math abilities might join math instruction in an older group. A student struggling with fundamental reading skills could work with a younger group or a tutor. If the situation is still not satisfactory, all staff, including the principal, will work to find a satisfactory solution. The benefit of mixed age classes is this same flexibility. Mixed age classes honor the individual interests, strengths, and weaknesses of each
