Think about it. Coconuts fall from trees and some of them crack open. Monkeys explore everything, and like babies, they put everything in their mouths. So they see this white stuff inside cracked coconuts and they try it, they like it, and they know it’s there. They also know that slamming a coconut against something will crack it open from watching falling ones slam on the ground. So they slam them on rocks, get ’em open, eat, and remember for next time. And they teach others in their tribe and their babies, too. They are not stupid. They do learn. You’d probably enjoy reading about the ape language experiments, where chimps and gorillas were taught sign language and simple reading.
