How do animals and plants adapt in the desert?
Much of the plantlife in the desert is, believe it or not, edible; it supports the entire food chain in the region. Prickly pear fruit is a prime example; however, nothing comes without a price. The fruit has small furry thorns that must be cut off before eating. In fact, the saguaro cactus has a very high water content. Medicinally, the desert is extremely giving; the aloe very plant is found in the Mohave desert and is widely used, even today, by native american tribes. It is also used in many lotions and can be found on store shelves – it has a very cool, soothing feeling and is great on sunburns. Animals that can be eaten in deserts (particularly the Mohave), include snakes, tarantulas, scorpions, and then bigger game such as rabbits and javelina. Obviously, to get bigger game, you have to forge weapons first. An important point: watch out for poison. Many animals are venomous and are deadly just as the saguaro has thorns as a natural defense.
