How do American Indian fifth and sixth graders perceive mathematics and the mathematics classroom?

by Jeanne Mather (1997) [http://jaie.asu.edu/v36/V36S2how.htm] This paper presents a study that attempted to answer some questions about mathematics education in relation to the under achievement of American Indians in the fields of mathematics and science. The study compared American Indian, African American, Hispanic, and white fifth and sixth graders; perceptions of mathematics, mathematical ability, role models, teacher treatment, teaching practices, and career goals. The findings indicated that some perceptions were unrelated to the racial/ethnic background of the student while other perceptions were significantly correlated to the student background. The implications are that there need to be changes in teaching strategies, curriculum and role model exposure. Other terms: minority student, questionnaire, student attitude, and classroom practice.
