How do alpacas get BVD?
Alpacas contract BVD primarily from the persistently infected crias that are shedding the virus in huge amounts into the environment in their body fluids. The virus is then ingested or inhaled by another animal. “Normal” animals that contract the virus shed it in small numbers while fighting it and can potentially could serve as a source of infection as well as virus carried in on peoples shoes, hands, clothing or equipment (rakes, shovels, buckets, etc). But the main source of infection appears to be contact with a PI cria.
